March 22nd Update
Vermeulen on 2010-22-03
There appears to still be some confusion over this change. I would like to make more things clear:
- Illfonic has obtained the rights to the Nexuiz's engine code, along with a license for the Quake1 engine. The engine has been licensed as non-GPL for Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360, these are very closed platforms and the game had no chance of reaching them under GPL.
- The Nexuiz's engine's prime developer (LordHavoc) is currently working on the Illfonic console version. The Nexuiz codebase will benefit from Illfonic's additions
- IllFonic actively promotes the GPL Nexuiz for all operating systems.
Nexuiz Coming to Consoles
Vermeulen on 2010-4-03
Illfonic have announced their development of the console version of Nexuiz with the release of the new Nexuiz website. While staying true to the gameplay refined over the past 5 years through open source development, Illfonic has completely updated the graphics and advanced the game for their console release. Here are some screens of the updated Victorian influenced art style:
The project will be showing at GDC and more information be given as time passes. On the project at Illfonic are a number of Nexuiz developers, and previous Quake1 community developers. They choose Nexuiz because they loved the intense arcade like nature of the gameplay, and hope to stay true to this style.
What this means for GPL Nexuiz Development, and a few issues to address:
- This in no way means the development of the cross platform Nexuiz will stop. Nexuiz has always been a community driven project and will continue to be so, the PC and Console version will be completely separate entities. Development of the cross platform Nexuiz will continue to be open. No new content of Illfonic's art will be GPL or added to Alientrap's development of Nexuiz, although the project will benefit from advances in the engine's technology.
- If the game is successful there will be royalty in the way of percentage of the game's profits once it is sold. Since Nexuiz is a community driven project Alientrap will be open with the royalty rates, these profits will help to maintain and develop Nexuiz along with Alientrap's projects in the future. Terms of the agreement are confidential but Alientrap will be open to it's developers on the splits the company receives.
- The Nexuiz.com domain has been personally given to Illfonic by me in order to help spread the word on the new project.
I am hoping the Nexuiz community will help spread the word also and embrace this project, as if it's successful it will not only benefit the project with funds but also bring more attention to the project as a whole.

Nexuiz In-Depth
-z- on 2009-05-28
Have you ever considered what is happening under the hood of Nexuiz? Ever wondered where all the settings you change in the menu are saved and how they are loaded again? Did you know that you can do so many undocumented things in Nexuiz, such as manipulating the text sizes or fonts of the HUD, or that there is a special menu that allows you to look for settings that are not available in the menu?
Now, in case you are curious, there is a new video podcast, started by Marius “GreEn`mArine” Shekow. The podcast is called “Nexuiz In-Depth“ and its episodes are being uploaded on YouTube in High-Definition quality on a weekly basis. The goal is to explain features of the game that are either hidden (not visible in the menu) or are not easy to understand. In order to approach the masses, the first four episodes will deal with the basics and after that, starting with episode 5, you will actually learn a lot of new things. Make sure that you watch the introduction episode to find out more about the series.
In order to watch the more recent episodes, have a look at the YouTube channel of the podcast
If you like to be informed about updates via RSS feed and like to download episodes, e.g. with Miro, just use this link to check out the HD quality episodes (notice: it can take up to 24 hours until the feed is updated).
Apart from that you might want to take a look at the official wiki of the podcast. It offers you the following possibilities:
- see the list of uploaded episodes
- summary and transcript of uploaded episodes, in case you just forgot or missed a detail and you want to look it up quickly
- information about upcoming episodes (teaser text and date when it will be uploaded)
- list of planned episodes. If you want to contribute by becoming a host of the show, you will find a list of episodes where the content is thought through, it just needs someone to create an episode for it!
- list of ideas for episodes (not „bundled“ to an episode yet), feel free to contribute there
Although the first 9 episodes of the podcast will be featuring GreEn`mArine as host, this doesn't mean that this is supposed to stay this way! As a matter of fact, the maker of the podcast anticipates and hopes that the series is taken over by other hosts, as this will help to get more episodes done, with more content, in a shorter amount of time. So if you think you have a suitable English language, know how to record audio and want to find out how to create podcast movies, have a closer look at this article on the wiki! As a matter of fact the situation is somewhat urgent, as GreEn`mArine is unable to produce any new podcast episodes due to a lack of time and the headstart of episodes only lasts until episode no. 9 which is going to be aired on July 2nd 2009. That means that the podcast would have to end abruptly, which would be very sad.
Anyways, if you like this video podcast, please advertise the YouTube channel web-link on public Nexuiz servers. After all, the first episodes are dedicated to the “average joe” which can be found on public servers frequently.
Nexuiz 2.5.1 released!
-z- on 2009-05-02
The important changes are:
- Memory leak fixed (important for dedicated servers)
- Muzzle flash bug fixed
- Six new music tracks by blkrbt
- Better loading screen. That fixed "this app does not respond" error on Vista.
- Better sounds by tenshihan
- Fixed choppy mouse movement with a custom 'cl_maxfps' value
- A few map fixes by terencehill
- Waypoint cache: Makes bots load much faster (the cache is created from normal waypoints when loading a map with bots for the first time)
Plus minor fixes found on our SourceForge Bug tracker.
Thanks for all the bug reports. Keep them coming.
We plan to release patches more frequent in the future. Maybe even once a month.

For a more complete list of changes see: https://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=672474&group_id=81584
As usual, you can download the newest release from our download page.
If you are providing a mirror of the release, please notify us so we can add it to the official mirror list. For any comments, suggestions or questions, please refer to our forum or the FAQ.
Because of many major changes there is NO PATCH available. To make sure nothing breaks, you should use a new directory to unzip Nexuiz 2.5!
If you use 2.5 and see a server with no gametype it's an 2.4.2 server, don't play on those. :)
Alientrap is also currently looking for new coders, modelers, mappers and people experienced with creating sound effects. If you feel like helping improve Nexuiz or Zymotic please contact the team via forum or IRC.
Two Nexuiz 1v1 Tourneys
Vermeulen on 2008-08-29
Starting Monday the 25th of August, signups open for two Nexuiz 1vs1 tournaments and will remain open until Sunday, the 7th of September.
This continues the series of tournaments hosted by planetnexuiz.com and is entirely community driven. No monetary prizes will be awarded, but we're sure there will be a lot of fun.
The two tournaments will run simultaneously, starting shortly after signups close and should finish around the same time. One tournament is dedicated to the players located in the European Union, and the other tournament is for North American players. You may choose which tournament to participate in but you may only select one, and you must compete on the servers for that region.
Once enough players have registered, admins will rate the players and assign them to groups. Each player competes against all other players in his or her group once. Groups will be ranked based on points given for wins/draws/losses of these group matches. Only the top 2 players from each group will advance into a double elimination bracket.
Once the EU and NA tournaments have finished, there will be a third tournament. It will be an invite-only tournament where the top EU players and NA players will compete against each other, as we're looking for the world's best Nexuiz 1vs1 player!
If you want to participate in one of the tournaments, visit the Tournament page. For more specific tournament information visit the "How does this work" page. Before you sign up, please ensure you have read the rules page.
We anticipate a great competition,
-- The Nexuiz 1vs1 Tournament Admins
