So anyway, apparently I was wrong, it does use the QC game code... not very happy about that.

But I still think the image should be linking to the real Nexuiz site. This is hurting the downloads a bit.

you said this in another thread. how many people will click on a small button on the bottom of a page? and what will be is there is more content ? how many people will even notice this?

they basicly make a new game so why dont they use a different name?

and why does no one even care about the community? the guys who hang out here for years and spending thier free time to create new content for this game. Just to see that a musican who tries to support indie develpopers ruins it and the whole community

The name "Nexuiz" isn't protected/trademarked/licensed in the US or EU yet.

So some community member with too much money, please go and grab it now! And then strike at these heretics!

Well, at LEAST they have a button that leads to this project. On the bottom bar, it says PC Nexuiz GPL. Of course, that doesn't make anything much better...

It looks awesome but at the same time I think just about EVERYBODY that has seriously contributed to and shaped this game has just been robbed. They couldn't even give it a different name. Also what engine is this using?

Nexuiz is under the GPL. That's just as good as being copyrighted.

EDIT:
"Nexuiz uses the latest version of the Dark Places engine ported for the next generation of gaming consoles."

Unless you want to violate the GPL and risk being sued by anybody that had anything to do with the development of Quake, Dark Places, or Nexuiz, we better start seeing some content on the PC side. Also if the all of that stuff still became available and the PC version got all of that, I think it would still be best to set the console Nexuiz in a different time period due to the different art styles used.

Screenie uploaded to Nexuiz Ninjaz, saved to hard drive, and burned to discs. Web page saved too.

I think I spotted Skyway, Running Man, Blue Sky (it was either this or Ruiner, but I know for a fact it was one of the two), and Starship in those screenshots on the site.

Well on consoles it's kind of impossible because Sony and M$ take a cut. The part that bothers me and everybody else is the GPL related stuff not being made available. Under the PC Nexuiz's license EVERYTHING is required to be freely available with any modifications made also being freely available. If they can some how release a console version and have all of that content available in GPL form on PC, I don't see a problem, but given how console makers role, I know that's impossible. A console Nexuiz would be pretty cool if they can do it without violating the GPL.

Copyright holders can relicence their work however they want, whether it's GPL or not (but they can't enforce the new license retroactively). Supposedly all contributors were contacted and only those who agreed to relicence will have their stuff used in the console game. I do wonder how that actually happened, seeing as tZork didn't know anything about it.

Problem is their is Quake source code in Nexuiz. Id (now owned by Bethesda) would have to re-license Quake's source code. If they can get past the license violations, I will pre order this game (no bullshit, this does look awesome and I always wanted to see this go mainstream), but they'll have to clear up all the problems first.

Good point, though I assume that the only source of possible remaining Quake code is DarkPlaces (not Nexuiz technically). I guess LordHavoc has that covered somehow...

I said I think I spotted those maps in some of them shots, but I don't know for sure. You probably didn't recognize any of them though because the art style is drastically different. The console Nexuiz has a steampunk/victorian and futuristic look to it, the PC version has more of a tribes/futuristic with a hint of anime and some randomness thrown in it. Number 7 for example looks quite a bit like Sky Way.

As I said previously, I don't understand why consoles like the Playstation or XBox even exist over the PC. If you have a good PC you can play any games as nicely as on any console, afaik. The only difference is that consoles are more restrictive and everything is paid for and controlled compared to the PC (and you get banned if you put Linux in your nickname on the XBox Live).

Also remembered this and couldn't help it:

Will this lead to our PC version being neglected I wonder...

Additionally will it actually match up to other more popular titles?

Maybe it is like the DLC, don't free on console, free on pc?! Maybe Lee vermeulen can answer? Why nexuiz on console? Nexuiz rest free or not? {if nexuiz become commercial game, i go on quake live <warsow is so much technical for me!}

The game was still fun, but only a small minority of downloaders actually got a chance to try out the gameplay. Most didn't get a chance because of high default settings that they never changed, lack of servers set up in their area (primarily north america), and no bot support.
2.0 was high enough quality to release commercially though

Ah, foreshadowing for 3.0 and Zymotic.

I just wanted to say that I do owe you an apology for this, since I think it would have been better to let you and a few other developers know about this ahead of time. I did sign an NDA so I didn't want to release any information I wasn't supposed to, but definitely it would have been beneficial to let you and other developers know so this didn't come as a surprize.

I don't understand why a fan of Nexuiz would be upset with this change though, this does not affect the current GPL Nexuiz and would just give it more exposure, and give a different take on a game you like. The developers at Illfonic truly do love the game, that’s the reason they choose to port it over many other online games like Nexuiz, they do not plan to 'replace' the current Nexuiz but expand upon it and bring it to a new audience. When the chance for this came up I wanted to do everything I could to make it happen, because I do really like what Illfonic is doing with the project and not only is it a good chance for Nexuiz to see a new audience, but honestly it's also a good chance to get the company 'Alientrap' more exposure for future projects.
I think some developers from Illfonic (which is a small team like Alientrap, with a few Quake community developers on it) will start posting on the forums soon.

The problem is that Quake's source code was released under GPL as was EVERYTHING in Nexuiz. While technically you can sell GPL software, you have to make sure everything still complies with that license and stay free and and open to modified/improved upon. IF the console version can have everything free and open just like what is stated in the GPL, then I'm all for a console release, hell I'd even pre-order it. Perhaps div0 can add to this. What really sucks is that I love the art style and the game looks plain bad ass, but like I said anybody that has in the littlest way contributed to this project, just got robbed.

I didn't have time to go into detail on the maps I saw in the screenshots earlier because I was late for work. Anyway...

What the screenies look like to me:

1 Can't tell
2 Most likely an original map, though it has some resemblance to Basement
3 Can't tell
4 Ruiner
5 Blood Prison?
6 Strength
7 Sky Way

I'll post some comparison shots later if your still not convinced. God the room is fucking spinning right now. Think I need to lye down.

One question is left open, namely, selling out the name. HOW do you think someone looking for our "Nexuiz" game will actually find it now? Google for "Nexuiz" will only find Illfonic results on the first page once their marketing department finished their job. nexuiz.com is gone (apart from a tiny link to our project that sure won't even stay for long). nexuiz.org, the next best alternative, is owned by a domain squatter.

So how can we possibly gain in popularity from this? We'll get drowned out by Illfonic's use of the name.

Our best choice probably is using a new name. Which sucks, as we'd ALSO forfeit all our current popularity by that.

I think you are right. Signing an NDA (== Non Disclosure AGREEMENT) indeed includes that you agreed to keep this information to yourself until it is too late to properly react to it. I find it very obvious that selling the name to a company will offend many developers and contributors to this project. Think about investing your spare time into something you love and then someone grabs that and sells it, with the future of your beloved project uncertain. Apologizing for this kind of procedure is appropriate, I think. But is it sufficient?

I also am a bit surprised, that your explanation comes two days after the website went online. If you did want to let the developers know, you also could have informed them right away when the website went online, not two days after emotions ran berserk in this community.

I was waiting for the "official" explanation of all this, but I really hoped it would be convincing in any way. Which it isn't, at least to me. It might have been, if at least something would flow back from this illfonic project to Nexuiz, be it money or content, but this will obviously not be the case. Like others already stated, I, too, fail to see the popularity benefit Illfonic-Nexuiz will provide to Nexuiz (come on, that tiny link down there? You must be kidding).

I am not in the position to be offended myself, since I did not (yet) contribute to this project other than recruiting/training noobs and helping out with information. However, I feel offended all the same on part of the developers and contributors that something like this is being done to them.

When i began to play nexuiz it was a community game, and till now it was a community game. Everyone who could supported it when he wanted, thats why it developed in so many directions. I guess thats what everyone like about the game. You can combine features you wanted, make unique that way.

The fact that even the creator (who was absent for like 4 years ) of nexuiz ingores the community and make dessisons, which will affect everyone is just a disrespect for anyone who supported this game for years. For my side i dont know, if support want to nexuiz anymore. I did it, because PC also can be non- comercial.
