A Concern for Nexuiz

Hey guys,

I have been a fan of Nexuiz since the 2.4 version and have been delighted by the amount of progress that has been since then. Nexuiz 2.5 to me was a great success and it showed me the great potential that this game has. However, I have feelings of concern over the development of this game. I know that you have had development issues before and from what I can discern that particular development issue has been dealt with. However I think this problem is still present within the development of Nexuiz in another form. Its not so much the number of Developers, but their actions in the process of improving this game seems to be lacking. Nexuiz version 2.5.3 has been incomplete over many days of it's set release and nobody seems to be wanting just to finish it off. I am not a developer myself and I do know wish to bring out as if I am omniscient on what is going on. Nevertheless, the project seems to be slowly dying, and I do not wish for this awesome project to go to waste after you have gone so far. Please try to pull it together, finish up 2.5.3, and keep doing the great job you guys have done so far.

Cheers, :)

I think it's far from dying actually, especially with 2.6 on the way. THEN it may die. ;P

Well, it's not exactly that we're LACKING development.. it's that we're developing too much, and creating lots of unstable things.. And with release dates (Which, we didn't have before btw) it kind of makes us try to rush it out before it's done and tested entirely. The main reason 2.5.2 had so many problems was because we lacked a stable branch of darkplaces, and of course because testing among players was rather limited.

I would say that the project isn't dying, it's simply changing.. And in the process of changing, it's becoming rather unstable and could go either way. Of course, I think it'll pull through. The real problem with Nexuiz at the moment is our models and our maps.. What we need is MUCH higher quality on both of those things, and Nexuiz will EASILY pull ahead. Our maps are slowly getting better, but our models are old and are lacking quality.

But well, with 2.5.3, we KNOW we must release soon, else we look pathetic for not being able to push out a HOTFIX.. Unfortunately, there are lots of changes made ALREADY, so it really cannot be called a hotfix.

Also: 2.6 will be a big success i'm betting, as it now uses my own balance and physics instead of Havocs. This plus the other planned changes I think are a big bonus, and will attract more players.

I am glad that it is not dying as I thought at first, but hopefully this change you speak of will bring it out for the better. How are you planning on fixing the problem of this instability?

Good stuff. I think theres widespread agreement that Havoc's changes were just a bit batty.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

They are also getting better now seemingly, (see new Xolar).
Thank you morphed ;)
Also hope we can push the other models into svn soon, wasn't it ai who took over most of them?

Two sure fire ways to (break every damn map in the game lol) balance the game are: introduce a second shotgun weapon and give the nex it's own ammo type. Doing those two changes would give the game a weapons balance as good as what was in the original Unreal Tournament. Whether or not a new ammo type is made for the nex I still think it would be cool to introduce a second shotgun that could kinda (in a way) play same role in Nexuiz that the minigun did in UT99 and have a rock/paper/scissors balance with the starter shotty.
I have left this website with the rest of the GPL Nexuiz community. You can find us at Xonotic.org

No actually, I think that would screw it up the most..

Six reasons:

#1: It breaks every balance config we have at the moment, and would require those balances to be updated (annoyingly)
#2: It breaks every map we have, and would require those maps to be updated (annoyingly)
#3: We ALREADY HAVE a shotgun, why add another one? If anything, make the shotgun a pickup-only weapon and make it more powerful.
#4: Nexgun doesn't have a problem of Nex whoring in good (Mine and FruitieX's) balances, which is the main reason you want this change
#5: There are too many technical set backs of changing the Nexgun ammo, including but not limited to: Finding HUD space to display the ammo, getting a new ammo model for the Nexgun, and having to recode quite a lot to make this new ammo work properly. (And yes, it is A LOT to code properly.. you have to account for all the warmup modes, cheats, mutators, game modes, etc etc... And of course the item coding itself.)
#6: IT DOESN'T ACTUALLY FIX ANYTHING, it just makes things more complex and annoying.
Do it yourself, or stop complaining.

You mean 2.6 will use your balance and physics by default?

Yes, at least that is how it stands at the moment.

Wow, how did you pull that off?

We heard time and again that 2.6 balance was not going to change course under any circumstances. And ditto with the physics.

Where did you hear that? But well, it turns out that LH liked my balance and physics.. And he decided he was too busy to continue working on his balance for 2.6, so he handed over the responsibility to me.

I can't wait for the 2.6. But it seems like a long way to go. I need to wait at least 180 days.

BTW, the roadmap of 2.5.3 hasn't been changed for a long time. What happens?

The devs with commit access generally do not use that unless it's for a change that requires feedback. It's not a reliable source to see how much activity is going on, the only real place is the commit log.

Are we allowed access to the commit log or is it for developers and such only?

In the spirit of open source software the SVN repository of nexuiz is publically available for reading. Not for writing though. So with that access the access to the log comes for free. You can browse the repository [and the logs] here:

http://dev.alientrap.org/repositories/show/nexuiz

Using this will spare the nice person providing the traffic for the SVN repo the full download of the 4 Gigs :)

Redmine seems to be severely lagging behind the actual commit log.
